Exercise is a huge part of staying fit and healthy. When we exercise our body, our mind and spirit benefits as well. Simple things such as walking a block or two in the mornings and evenings, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, can boost ones health immensely. There are many types of exercises to choose from and also several things you can do to ensure you exercise regularly.

Making time to exercise on a regular basis is probably the single best thing you can do for your physical and emotional well being. Exercise sheds body fat and creates muscle; it promotes a feeling of psychological well being. A daily regime of thirty minutes of sustained exercise has shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases. Exercise increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or 'good' cholesterol levels. It boosts the immune system improving overall health. During exercise the lungs airways are expanded, and toxins are excreted through perspiration. The cells in the body are well oxygenated and nourished because blood is being circulated throughout the body. It is easy to see how exercise protects our bodies from chronic diseases. It is essential to develop a daily exercise routine.

When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories - the more intense the activity, the more calories you burn, and the easier it is to keep your weight under control. You do not need to set aside major chunks of time for working out, you just need to establish and maintain an exercise routine as the aim is to exercise 'regularly'. There are also many everyday things that we can do to get our metabolism going such as taking stairs instead of elevators and walking during lunch breaks. It does not matter what type of physical activity you perform - sports, planned exercise, household chores, yard work, or work-related tasks - all are beneficial.

Regular physical activity can leave you breathing easier. Physical activity delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. In fact, regular physical activity helps your entire cardiovascular system work more efficiently. When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you will have more energy to do the things you enjoy. Planned exercise, household chores, yard work, or work related tasks are all beneficial to your well-being.

Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals which may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out. You will also look better when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. Regular physical activity can even help prevent depression.

A good night's sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood; and you guessed it - physical activity is sometimes the key to better sleep. Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. However, If you exercise too close to your bedtime, you may be too energized to fall asleep. If you are having trouble sleeping, you might want to exercise earlier in the day. For tips on having restful sleep, see getting enough sleep.
