Décor - Tips on Improving Your Home's Appearance

A big part of having comfort at home, is having the right décor. Home decorating is very much individual, and so, tapping into your inner self will bring out your true sense of style and design suitable for you. Working with your family in creating the kind of environment you all can love, appreciate, and be comfortable in, is also important, and is a great way to incorporate harmony.

While taste and style varies, from one individual to another, choosing the right color scheme that coordinates with each other, and the other décor in a room, is always the same.

Color and arrangement can either make or break a room. Choosing the right color for the desired feel of each room in your home, is important, as each color has a different effect, and create different moods. Before decorating any room, you should take a moment to look at each color; black, blue, green, orange, purple, red, violet, white, and yellow; see how each make you feel, and decide on the feel you want to have in each room. Black and white are two extreme shades. Black is an attention grabber, but it can also darken a person's mood. Black is mostly beautiful, in decorating, when used in small amount. It is a very good enhancer when used sparingly. White on the other hand can have a positive and soothing effect on one's emotion, but it can also be uninspiring, and lack stimulation. It is a good color for warm climates, as it reflects light, creating a cooler temperature. White paint is also mostly used to mix with other color paints to create different shades.

Blue, Green, Orange, Purple, Red, Violet, and Yellow are all solid colors, and mixing and experimenting with these color paints will give a variety of different shades or tones, and thus different feels. Blues and greens are associated with nature. They evoke a sense of peace and calm. Orange is a color that tends to make people happy. Purple and violet are colors that have a way of making things look more sophisticated. Red is an exciting color. It incites passion and speeds up metabolism. Yellow is sensational. It creates a sense of ease and relaxation, and has a very positive effect on people. Pink is an extremely calming shade, and brown when used conscientiously, adds subtlety to a room. Grey is a very dismal shade. However, it can be quite an accessory when used with certain shades, or on furniture, to complete the décor in a room. It also requires less maintenance and does very well in common areas, and on handrails. When all is said and done, it is the color's effect on your own mind that is important, and only you can truly understand your own impressions.

When it comes to flooring, there is a wide variety to choose from. There is tile, wood finishes, laminates, carpets, and rugs. There are a number of different tile types to choose from, but the most commonly used are ceramic, marble, and vinyl. Ceramic tiles are either glazed or porcelain. Porcelain is usually more expensive, as they are made from a blend of finer grain clays, and are highly resistant to moisture, staining, and wear. Glazed ceramic tiles are usually less expensive, as they are made from regular clay, but they are also a great hold up to heavy traffic. Ceramic tiles add texture, richness, and color to any room.

Marble tiles are durable, beautiful to look at, easy to clean, but very expensive. Marble is a metamorphic rock, resulting from regional or contact metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks, either limestone or dolostone. The metamorphic process causes a complete recrystallization of the original rock into an interlocking mosaic of calcite and/or dolomite crystals. Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of very pure limestone, and the many colored marble are due to various mineral impurities, such as clay, silt or iron oxide, which were originally in the limestone as grains or layers. Marble tiles are worth every penny they cost; not only are they gorgeous and durable, but they also add quite a bit of value to your home.

Vinyl tiles also comes in lots of colors and designs. They are not very durable, and their lifespan depends greatly on proper installation, and proper after care. The area on which these tiles are going to be laid, has to be very clean and smooth, and a minimum time of at least twenty four (24) hours needs to be allowed after installation, before walking on them, so they can be completely set.

Wood floors are versatile, as they can be installed in their natural form, or stained with any stain color you desire. They are easy to care for, and wet mopping lightly with a little murphy's oil added to warm water, will give a clean finish, while maintaining its quality. However, extra care needs to be taken when moving around furniture on these floors as they may scratch and damage the floor's surface. Laminate flooring is a very hard flooring surface which is layered during manufacture. They can be made to resemble any other type of floor surface, such as hardwood, ceramic, etc. Laminates are durable and easy to care for. They do not need wax or anything else added to them. Vacuuming and a light wet mopping (avoid overwetting) is enough to maintain its quality while giving a clean finish.

Carpets are available in all styles and colors. They are made from nylon, olefin, or polyester. Carpets are durable, but very much high maintenance, and as such, should be used in rooms with very little traffic.

Rugs are also very beautiful. They comes in a wide variety of tones and styles. When it comes to rug, do not be afraid to spend a little extra money to get exactly what you want, as they can last for years to come. However, be sure to check the quality, as there are a lot of imitation rugs as well.

Now that you've chosen the colors for your walls and ceilings, the color theme for each room, and your desired flooring, it is now time to select the style and feel of furniture and accessories to complete each room. The choice of furniture is again very individual, but coordination and arrangement is key in bringing it all together, for each room, in a comfortable yet elegant way.

Adding wall arts and your favorite family photos in beautiful frames to your walls, can only enhance an already beautiful room. Candles make your room décor special, they add fragrance, and set a mood that says home and comfort. Potted plants and floral arrangements complete a room by giving it life. And finally, choosing and installing the right hardware, such as door knobs, and faucets, will also add elegance to your home.

Whatever your choice of decoration, make it a fun filled experience for the whole family. Happy decorating!
